I was recently reminded that this exchange had happened while Ian and I were talking about gingerbread.
1 May 2025 was three weeks ago and I can confirm with pleasure that it was a fairly normal day. I was at work, where among other things I dealt with some emails about election coverage and logged a call with our facilities helpdesk to have a carpet cleaned following a minor water leak.
As a result I am pleased to confirm that my ability to see precisely five years into the future is working nicely. Or at least it was five years ago. If you want to know whether it’s still working now you’ll have to wait another five years.

This is so niche. How long have you had this in your pocket?
Honestly? For about a day before I posted it. I’d love to say I’d had it in my pocket for five years, biding my time, but if that was true I’d have posted it on the second. As it was I happened to spot it and it was still close enough that I could get away with it.
Is there a chance that you wrote it five years ago on a piece of paper and then lost it? How adept are you at holding onto bits of paper?
Not that adept. No more than moderately adept, if I’m honest.
Things I am fully adept at include dismantling Jaffa cakes so I can eat the orange bit last and reversing into my driveway.
You don’t have a driveway. You have a hole cut into the ground that’s full of water, that is sometimes confused for a canal by local ramblers.
